CG was established in 1937 in India and since then the Company has been a pioneer and has retained its leadership position in the management and application of electrical energy.

Enjoying a reputation of stature for over eight decades, CG, which originated in India, has transformed itself into a global corporation. With world-class manufacturing plants across 9 locations in India and one in Sweden, and a Pan India network of 5 Regional and 14 Branch offices, with around 3,113 employees, CG has been the Supplier of Choice of high quality, ‘Smart’ electrical, industrial and consumer products and solutions, the world over.

Our unique and diverse portfolio ranges from Induction Motors, Drives, Transformers, Switchgears, and other allied products for the Industrial and Power sectors as well as Traction Motors, Propulsion systems, Signaling Relays etc., for the Indian Railways. Recently, we also made a foray into the business of Consumer Appliances (Fast Moving Electrical Goods) such as Fans, Pumps, and Water Heaters. We enhance many aspects of industrial and personal life. This portfolio has been structured into two business lines—Industrial Systems (including Motors, Railways and Fast Moving Consumer Goods) and Power Systems.

CG thrusts upon each employee to be aware of and practice these 5 CG Values, and behave in accordance with it.

The CG Code of Business Practices has been conceptualized considering CG`s multi segment and transnational culture, as well as the need to respect the cultures of all companies in the CG fold. The Code strives to provide guiding principles in various business situations and is the lighthouse for decision making and actions, with integrity and discipline. This Code also aims to minimize adverse consequences due to ambiguity, for CG and every employee.

CG has a robust business review framework, to monitor the ultimate direction and implementation of the Company`s business strategies and plans.

Periodically, each business presents its strategic road map at specially constituted Board meetings. Approved initiatives form a part of the growth and business strategy of the Divisions. The performance of the businesses is reviewed at monthly meetings, through a monthly review by the Managing Director with the Management team. Operational Issues and budgets are extensively monitored through an elaborate Management Information System, with adequate focus on non-financial business enablers including process improvements and customer service.

Corporate Initiatives :
CG is poised to scale even greater heights and has set challenging targets in its quest to be a leading player in the global market, to ensure a sustainable future for all its stakeholders. The plans and targets cover all the key areas that CG wishes to excel in : Growth, Productivity, Technology and People. In order to achieve these, CG has instituted various performance improvement and measurement systems. Several critical business enablers are driven on a company – wide basis as corporate drives.

Some of these Corporate initiatives are CG Productivity System (CGPS), Six Sigma (for “quality as perceived by the customer”), CG Mile, Business Excellence, CSR, etc.

A separate monitoring framework has been established for a more focused review of these enablers with senior management participation. This dedicated approach has enabled the Company to exceed 133% CGPS productivity norms at all its India locations and enhance its process and supplier quality through six sigma standards.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

CG believes that its Management is accountable to its shareholders, for creating, protecting and enhancing their shareholder value, and reporting to them on the Company’s performance in a timely and transparent manner.

Strategic Business Units

This is the largest business of CG, which is now well and firmly established throughout the world. CG’s Industrial Systems is engaged in the business of power conversion equipment a wider spectrum of High and Low Voltage rotating machines (motors and alternators), stampings, as well as railway transportation and signalling products. Industrial Systems is largely India focused with a very strong market presence and market leadership position in many segments. It also caters to foreign markets through its facilities in Hungary and exports. Its product portfolio includes motors and generators ranging from 100W to 100MW. CG enjoys a market leadership for AC Motors and the second position in AC Generators and DC Motors in India. CG is the largest manufacturer of Low Tension motors in India offering a range of AC and DC motors, ranging from 0.18kW to 450kW in various standard and customized configurations to respond to the exacting demands of the industry. To ensure the highest levels of customer satisfaction, the latest designs have been incorporated for its range of product offerings, to achieve better performance as well as versatility in mechanical features. The products of this business have received many international certifications including CSA, UL, CE and Flame Proof Gas Group IIA and IIB certifications. The customer emphasis for this business group has been the textile, cement, sponge iron and large steel plants sectors, which are growing segments

Power Business includes Transformers, Switchgear, Circuit Breakers, Vacuum Interrupters, Network Protection & Control Gear, as well as Design, Execution and Servicing of Turnkey T&D as well as Sub-Station Projects and Solutions including complete end to end Renewable projects. It is a high value, high turnover business with a strong global footprint. Its facilities are located in different parts of Belgium, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, France and UK.

CG serves almost 40% rolling stock equipment of electric locomotives. CG Business consists of 3 main product lines viz. Traction Machines and Systems- AC & DC Motors, Alternators, solutions for self propelled vehicles, Traction Electrics -IGBT based Propulsion Systems & Panels, Railway signaling products -Signaling relays, point machines, data logger and coach products like panels and fans. Apart from above we do supply loco and track side transformer, Stamping for motors made by Railways, auxiliary motors for locomotives, Breakers, Surge arrestors and Instrument transformers. Our strength includes design, development, manufacturing, installation testing and commissioning of all products offered to Indian Railways.

CG was established in 1937 in India and since then the Company has been a pioneer and has retained its leadership position in the management and application of electrical energy.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is vested with the responsibility of guiding and reviewing the Company’s overall Management philosophy and direction; and, influencing the CG Group’s Global footprint and business perspective across all its companies worldwide.

The Board of Directors of the Company consists of seven Board members. Mr. Vellayan Subbiah is the Chairman, Non-Executive Non-Independent Director and Mr. Amar Kaul, Managing Director & CEO. Out of the five other Directors Mr. M A M Arunachalam is a Non-Executive Non-Independent Director and Mrs. Vijayalakshmi R Iyer, Mr. P S Jayakumar, Mr. Sriram Sivaram, and Mr. Mammen Chally are Non-Executive Independent Directors and professionals of international stature.

The Board is actively involved in formulating the Company’s business strategies and thereafter, regularly reviewing the Company’s major plans and policies to achieve its growth and profitability objectives. The pre-dominant independent composition of the Board, facilitates constructive critique and, helps challenge the Management to continuously stretch its performance.

Induction and Familiarisation Programme for Directors

CG has in place a structured Induction and Familiarisation Programme for its Directors to understand and update themselves with CG’s business and operations on a continuous basis. A new Director will attend a familiarisation programme which is tailored to the needs of their appointment. This includes a presentation by the Managing Director giving a broad overview of the Company. The induction pack to be provided to a new Director will include CG’s Board and Committee framework, CG Policies and procedures, statutory declarations, forms and other documentation.

In addition to the above, the Programme also includes actions for continuous business familiarisation. These actions include periodic presentations on strategic road map, budgets and other operational matters at specially constituted Board meetings, update by Business Heads on progress of Key Projects, presentations by the Managing Director indicating overall performance against strategic plan, business-wise performance, key achievements & financials and regular interactions with plant management and employees.

HISTORY

The development of technology at CG goes back a long way to its founder, Colonel R E B Crompton, a pioneer in the electrical engineering during the late 19th, early 20th century. CG was the first to introduce locomotives in India.

There have been a number of technology firsts from CG. The establishment of R&D in 1977 stands as a testimony to the spirits of the early Pioneers and the Vision of the founder of CG. Our ability to successfully manage technology from the earliest bright ideas to full delivery is vital for the future.
